White Rabbits

As a kid growing up in England, I learned to say “white rabbits” on the first of the month. Theoretically, if you say this phrase aloud as soon as you think of it on the first day of a new month, the rest of the month will be lucky. I’ve never tested it empirically, but I still adhere to this charming superstition (much nicer than “a pinch and a punch for the first of the month”!). Incidentally, my Chinese zodiac sign is the rabbit, supposedly the luckiest of signs.

A number of you have requested that I post lyrics to the song I posted. I started writing this song when I was working a wedding at a super fancy-pants hot spring resort, sitting by the fire pit one night. I’d been listening to a lot of  country music about hard livin’, hard drinkin’, heartbreak and loneliness. I started with the phrase “you can’t shoot the messenger” and the song grew from there.

I was sitting there at the table, cup of black coffee in my hand

Opened the morning paper, nine more killed in the desert sand

Reporter she had to tell it, for a minute I thought of her

People don’t like to hear bad news, but you can’t shoot the messenger

No you can’t shoot the messenger

*

I was driving fast down a back road, just avoiding the interstate

Didn’t see that patrol car, until it was too late

He said you’re gonna get a ticket, you was going 20 over for sure

People don’t like to hear bad news, but you can’t shoot the messenger

No you can’t shoot the messenger

*

I was sitting there on the barstool, drinking on bitters and rye

She sat down there beside me, and looked me straight in the eye

She said he don’t love you anymore, through my tears her pretty face was a blur

People don’t like to hear bad news, but you can’t shoot the messenger

No you can’t shoot the messenger

White rabbit to you! I love your lyrics, sis. Have you thought about a chorus to follow your verses? It would help pull the song together. Love you! 🙂

There is a chorus, but it seemed like too much…
