Sunday morning

Not trying to overdo the Johnny Cash, but this just seemed appropriate. It’s such a joy to watch people have so much fun with music – Kris and Johnny are obviously having the time of their life.

Last night I went to a party with a number of excellent musicians in attendance. There was lots of old-timey stuff, which I know a lot of, but most of the songs were unfamiliar to me. Later, when the crowd died down, I sang a few songs with a young couple. The man was an amazing guitar/dobro player and the woman had a beautiful voice and was very skilled at harmonizing. It was a delight to sing with them when they played songs I knew. There was some James Taylor, Elton John and lots of others that I don’t recall. He even played some Metallica (shockingly well) at my request and I got to sing “Nothing Else Matters” around a campfire at a hippy party in Colorado. I’ve come to the realization that making music with others is one of the fundamental pleasures of life, and I want to do more of it.

There was one weird thing, though: even when all of the very accomplished string instrument players were present, no one knew any Doc Watson or Johnny Cash tunes! Whaaaaaaa?

And now here is an adorable French girl with a lovely voice singing “Sunday Morning” by the Velvet Underground.
